The Oil Filtration Market
OilQuip believe that Australia has three distinct ‘generations’ of filtration equipment in use.
Gen 1
These are basic pump and filter units, possibly with a basic vacuum dehydration capability, no real-time information on oil cleanliness and pretty simplistic. Some of these units are manufactured in Australia and many are imported from India or China through large filtration resellers with their focus mainly on the consumables.
Gen 2
These systems are what we BioKem had previously rented, such as the older model vacuum dehydrator (VDOPS) supplied by OFS. These units are easy to use; have a range of features such as auto water drain, bypasses, pre- filtration bag, even a laser particle counter fitted inline. These systems were as advanced as you could find in Australia up until this year and are very effective at moisture, entrained gas and particulate removal.
Gen 3
The current technology available is representative of what OilQuip supplies, with all the Gen 2 attributes plus the following options:
- ⦁ Real-time moisture, particle and flow-rate meters
- ⦁ Live telemetry of flowrate, moisture and particle count back to base or control room
- ⦁ Integration with control systems for remote control
- ⦁ LED lighting of oil dehydration circuitry
- ⦁ Data logging and reporting, with USB ports for connectivity and/or integration with mobile devices such as iPad, iPhone or tablet through an on-board Wi-Fi router.
Filtration Media
OilQuip has found that the large standard 840X filter elements on the VDOPS have the best filtration capability of any filters that we have used including the large players.
For example, BioKem conducted a pre-commissioning hot oil flush on a Solar Gas Turbine/Compressor package using OFS rental equipment. They achieved a laser particle count code of better than ISO 4406 9/8/7 (less than NAS 1), which is extremely clean oil!
They have also achieved this outcome on multiple turbine purification jobs with oil volumes of 13,500 litres plus.
In Summary
BioKem’s success with the Oil Filtration Systems (OFS) rental equipment led them to solely using the OFS brand in Australia where possible. BioKem and other Australian filtration specialists use the equipment in service roles with results that are significantly better than industry benchmarks. Users consider that the OFS product and media meet the ‘Gold Standard’ for oil filtration today.
